This year's annual ADL Initiative Principal Investigator meeting was held 2-3 April at the Institute for Defense Analyses in Alexandria, VA. At this meeting, ADL team members, R&D project principle investigators and government representatives came together to learn about new and on-going projects, and collaborate on building the future learning ecosystem together. The meeting goals are to (1) Provide all stakeholders with a more holistic view of the ADL Initiative projects and how they intersect to build larger outcomes; (2) Facilitate information exchange on emerging concepts and Government needs for learning science and learning technologies; (3) Identify specific collaboration opportunities, among projects and across agencies, to improve their effectiveness or otherwise gain efficiencies.

Training and education technologies have amazing promise; however, without the guiding blueprint of learning science, technological solutions can become costly, cumbersome, and ineffectual. At worst, technologies may be seen as "silver bullets" or magical solutions, capable of solving training or education challenges by simply purchasing the latest systems (a road that leads to disillusionment, waste, and potentially expensive failure). Modeling, simulation, training, and education professionals know better.

"Out-Learn, Out-Think, Win: Future Learning and Development" tells a story about how Defense personnel may learn in the future, using complex interconnected network-based technologies. The video is a fictional depiction of how a future learning ecosystem, or the Total Learning Architecture (TLA) could work. Viewers travel with Staff Sergeant (SSG) Reynolds along her learning pathway from training prerequisites to a culminating exercise, both of which take advantage of distributed learning. SSG Reynolds works through the individualized learning experience at a flexible pace and proceeds on to the collective learning event, which is facilitated by an instructor and connects live and virtual team members to accomplish the mission. The instructor takes advantage of personnel's competencies and skills, which have been shared and made interoperable across systems. This demonstrates potential efficiencies in cultivating teams for mission success.
